Eurovision Song Contest 2008 - The Final

One of the reasons to exist has blessed us again last night - the Eurovision Song Contest.


There is no use explaining to non-believers the magic of this event, and I'm not gonna try to do that. We just know that we understand, and the mutual understanding brings together the diverse and beautiful countries of Europe, together in music, in party, and in bad dresses and hair.

Let's first of all have a look at the 5 countries we didn't talk about yet:

As for the personal faves: Finland was amazing. A great metal tune and an awesome performance, featuring a charismatic bandleader. Excellent!



Speaking of a charismatic bandleader: Harun Tekin, my Turkish delight. Mor ve Ötesi had a perfect appearance as well, a great, Muse-inspired Rock song in Turkish (<3) and an enthralling performance. This was perfect - they should have won...



Iceland was great as well with their gay disco/eurodance track - I do believe that the female singer didn't quite fit in, but all in all that was a very nice song.

As for the depression and the black holes: Croatia and Bosnia. What have you done?? What did we do to you that you make us suffer so much?? From countries that gave us acts like Indira Radić or Colonia... we now get this? Sorry that I could not find a trace of creativity or the desire to differ from the typical Song Contest entries - I could only see awkward insanity, embarrassing helplessness, non-existent songwriting and... old men. Think about what you've done and bring turbo folk or euro techno next time. I mean it!

Also worth mentioning: Sweden sent an alien to perform this year. I was shocked to see Charlotte Perrelli, but I can't tell you how shocked I was to learn that this fucking was Charlotte Nilsson! The winner of 1999 ('take me to your heaven') - oh my GOD!!!! What did you do to your face??? Very very sad and unsettling... She looked like something from outer space.

And yeah... Germany. I'm sorry. We have to address your disaster. I cannot believe your snootiness, Germany! Are you able in any way to perform normal thinking? ARD's Peter Urban is the saddest example of this outstanding act of denying reality: not only did he say that the No Angels did a great performance (I'm sorry, on which planet were you when they slaughtered their already incredibly bad song on stage?), no, he also presumed to mention again the oh so unfair "Eastern European Mafia" that shoves the points onto each other and gives the glorious Western European countries no chance to perform well.

Peter Urban, honey, listen to me and listen well: your entry sucked. It was so bad that I cannot even find words to describe the pain I felt when hearing and watching your performance. Everything about it was wrong: the song, the voices, the costumes, the choreography, the hair (MY GOD, THE HAIR!!!). This has nothing to do with the fact that the Eastern European countries send each other all the points. This has only to do with the fact that your entry sucked. It deserved the last place. Yes, the pirates from Latvia were better than you. Much, much better. Is it even necessary to mention that also the Western European countries didn't give you any points? That only Bulgaria (that - if I remember correctly - is in Eastern Europe, right?) gave you 12 pity points because of Lucy's roots? That your self-pity combined with your arrogance speaks volumes and once more confirms what the rest of the world has always thought about your country? No, it's not necessary. Cause your entry sucked, and everyone on this planet with ears and eyes knows it.

Metal Hammer Vol. 125

1) Dark Age - Outside The Inside:

Guter Beginn, gefällt mir zunächst, doch dann der cleane Gesang – und keiner weiß warum. Dark Age hatten meiner Meinung nach wirklich viel Potenzial, aber nach „Silent Republic“ haben sie sich einfach viel zu sehr an eingängige, seichte Musik angebiedert. Vielleicht sind ihnen aber auch nur die Ideen ausgegangen.

Auf jeden Fall nicht mein Fall.

2) Avantasia - Shelter From The Rain:

Ganz tolle Stellen – aber mein großer Kritikpunkt: Sammets Stimme. Irgendwie will ich die nur bei Edguy hören – aber für diese Band – vor allem wenn dann mehrstimmige Chöre kommen – geht das nicht.

Unbedingt zu hören: der Song von Avantasia, auf dem Bob Catley zu hören ist.

3) Draconian - Seasons Apart

Sollte mir auf jeden Fall mehr von dieser Band anhören. Schöne Frauenstimme – nicht zu nervig oder zu sehr im Vordergrund – schön langsamer Doom Rock mit My Dying Bride Stimme. Ein wenig Katatonia – My Dying Bride – Lake of Tears

4) Eluveitie - Inis Mona

Viel über die Band gelesen, aber nichts gehört bis dato. Deshalb war ich auch gespannt, wie Eluveitie klingen. Enttäuscht bin ich zwar nicht wirklich, aber wer Equilibrium, Hollenthon und alte Finntroll gerne hat (so wie ich) kann dem hier nicht die Welt abgewinnen. Werde ich mir auf einem Festival sicher ansehen, bei Gelegenheit die CD anhören, mehr aber vorerst nicht. Auch wenn man beim Refrain schon das Glas erheben möchte in leicht zum Mitschunkeln anfängt.

5) Legion Of The Damned - Slaughtering The Pigs

Gut, diesen Song kannst ich schon ausführlich vor der Hammer CD. Die neue Scheibe ist wieder sehr gut geworden – obwohl nur das Rerecording der letzten Occult CD, so birgt auch dieser Song Kraft und alles, was diese Band auszeichnet: Schnelligkeit, Direktheit und niemals Langeweile. Man will einfach beim Hören dieses Liedes mitbangen, die Band live sehen und sich mitreißen lassen. Ich bin schon auf das vierte Album gespannt – das wird wahrscheinlich zeigen, ob die Band wirklich den Durchbruch schaffen kann. Im Moment die Band neben Bolt Thrower mit den meisten Nackenbrecher-Songs pro CD

6) Death Angel - Sonic Beatdown

Ich denke, dass das hier der letzte Versuch für eine längere Zeit war, mit dieser Band, bzw. deren Musik etwas anfangen zu können. Zu amerikanisch, zu hecktisch, zu nichtssagend. Ein paar modernere Einflüsse. Overkill auf acid … oder so

7) Dark Fortress - Edge Of Night

Auch diese CD hatte ich bereits in meinem Besitz, bevor ich den Sampler gehört habe. Und sie haben frecherweise auch das beste Lied der neuen CD hier raufgegeben. Nicht das der Rest der Scheibe schlecht wäre, aber das Niveau kann nicht gehalten werden. Ist auch sehr ok, denn für mich muß eine CD nicht unbedingt 10 Übersongs haben. 2 bis 3 genügen schon für ein tolles Album (s. Manowar – Sons of Odin).

Zum Song: Toller Satyricon Riff – hätte nahtlos auf die Volcano CD folgen können. Ein wenig störend (merke das gerade über meine Anlage): die Hintergrundeffekte – ich hoffe das mutiert nicht zu Agathodaimon Ausmaßen. Und das Mittelteil ist etwas aus dem Takt (wieder mit diesen Hintergrundgeräuschen). Ansonsten wurde hier aber alles richtig gemacht!

8) Atrocity - The Sun Always Shines On TV

Schönes Intro – könnte zu einem Hollywood 60er Jahre Film gehören. Danach Überlegen. Habe anscheinend schon lange keine Atrocity Scheibe gehört. Alex Kull mag ich persönlich nicht – aber die Musik gefällt mir. Da werde ich mir auch das Album anhören. Ansehnlicher Gothic Rock mit dem Hang zum Opulenten.

9) Norther - We Rock

Das dritte Album, das ich mir ohne anzuhören nach Verkaufsstart gleich besorgt habe. Und es ist das Album, das mich als einziges enttäuscht hat. Irgendwie fehlt der Musik das gewisse etwas, vielleicht sind es auch die modernen Einflüsse bei einigen Liedern, oder einfach uninspirierte Songs. Dieser Song ist ein Spiegelbild. Teils gute Passagen, aber nichts Neues – das hat die Band schon vor 8 Jahren gemacht. Ich hatte einmal die Hoffnung, dass sie neben Bodom die große Kraft im melodischen Death Metal Bereich sein werden, aber wo Bodom sich in den (sehr engen) Grenzen dieses Genres weiterentwickelt hat, treten Norther nur mehr auf der Stelle. Da klingt jedes Lied auf der Platte wie der berühmte letzte Song auf einer CD (der zum Ausklingen).

10) Mourning Caress - Nothing Is Lost

Metalcore. Das Wort muß ich voranstellen, damit das hier klappt. Manche Bands finde ich sehr gut aus dem Genre. Killswitch Engage, Caliban (alte) und The Sorrow zB. Diese Band hier macht sehr interessant Musik, der Gesang… nun gut, Death Metaller/Thrasher haben mit ihrem Stil gezeigt, dass man nicht singen können muß, um die Vocals zu geben, aber ich kann mich auch nach dem zweiten Mal anhören nicht an Mourning Caress’ Gesang gewöhnen. Sollen andere gut finden.

11) Lost Dreams - I Curse You

Österreicher, yeah! Und die sind schon länger dabei – haben es sich echt verdient auf dem Hammer Sampler einmal oben zu sein. Das Lied gefällt – schaut Norther – so kann man diese Musik gestalten ohne sich Streichhölzer zwischen die Agenlieder stecken zu müssen… Abwechslungsreich – 2stimmig – erinnert mich an die früheren Machwerke von Darkfall. Mit einem guten Plattendeal geht für die Band vielleicht noch etwas. Der Refrain klingt übrgens nach „I kiss you“ ;-)

Wenn man jetzt frühe Vanitas, Darkfall und Lost Dreams hernimmt, kann man sogar richtig eine österreichische Musikrichtung erkennen.

12) Made Of Hate - Bullet in Your Head

Für mich neben Lost Dreams die Entdeckung dieser CD. Der Song ist echt klasse, egal soll hier der Titel/Text sein (ist es mir ja auch bei den infantilen Ergüssen von Legion of the damned)- Ich habe von der Band davor noch nichts gehört, und was die hier machen gefiel mir von der ersten Gesangslinie an. Da muss ich mir jedenfalls mal die CD anhören – könnte ja auch nur ein „One hit wonder“ sein. Vor allem die Musik im zweiten Teil gefällt mir – Bodom in Reinkultur.

Starting with such an unique voice in the Pop world, Chris Martin from Coldplay. I have to admit im not such a big fan but I think no one who ever turned on a Radio could miss one of their famous songs. Next a song from my all-time fav band Iron Maiden from one of their later albums, Dance of Death. The song was ok, not so outstanding as their older albums and one memory I connect to this album is that it was actually one of the first albums that I bought about a year ago after spending not one coin on CDs for years and all the remastered Iron Maiden CDs were sold for a bargain in a local music store ... ok, ok I wasnt familiar at all with the music that was on the disc, is rather the album cover that attracted me, allthough looking on the CDs that I have from Iron Maiden stacked up in my moderate shelf only reserved for original CDs all the others look better - Somewhere In Time just an example. Jumping from one of my most fav bands to the next, Opeth and one of their rare cover songs Circle of the Tyrant, which is originally from Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion. Great song indeed but im not going to judge who made the better interpretation ;), nah I think Opeth had a reason to cover this song and see it as a tribute to the song from Celtic Frost. Ok ... seems Today wants to spoil me with great bands, cause next is Paradise Lost and if someone would ask me what my most favourite Metal bands are the 3 so far would be amongst them. Lydia from One Second, just one of the great songs on this album, a rather slow song with a very intensive voice of Nick Holmes in the more quiet parts.
A long and smooth instrumental intro leads us to a song from Pink Floyd and with 12:22 quite long for the progressive Rock band and no doubt has its psychadelic flair mixed with a rather melancholy part in the end.
From the slow tunes to an extraordinarily powerful voice, Seka, who emits such an energy in live performances that you risk to be blast away when you stand too close ;). I cant wait to see her live again in just about 5 weeks, the perfect concert to start into the summer.
Erm yeah ... a song, or rather a tune from the OST of an anime fills in the gap to the probably most famous "export" from Liverpool (on a side note, the European Capital of Culture 2008), The Beatles. The chain of great artists is not interrupted and Tom Jones makes his appearance on Today. When I was talking of unique voices, here is another example.
The sun is breaking through the clouds again and I will take the rest of the songs to a walk around Vienna ... was babbling too much already anyways ;)
