Thyrane - sickening (Hypnotic)
is it better to start with the bad or the good, or should you just get started ? ... ah well, I never know tbh :). Here we go again, Graveyard Classics a cover album from
Six Feet Under. I just cant get used to his voice, rather his growling.
Korn, interesting to hear a song from Issues again, the album I really like of em. Therion was the bright star today, illuminating the desert of set.

Giuseppe Verdi - gerusalem! (I Lombardi)
Haddaway - desert prayer (The Drive)
Muse - unintended (Showbiz)
Trio Exklusiv - teguise (Trio Exklusiv)
Speedway - genie in a bottle
Virgin Steele - theme from 'the marriage of heaven and hell' (Invictus)
Arkona - po zverinym tropam (Vozrozhdenie)
Hypocrisy - never to return (The Fourth Dimension)
Enthroned - final armageddon [epilogue] (Towards The Skullthrone Of Satan)
Norther - drowning (Till Death Unites Us)
Slayer - show no mercy [live] (Live Undead)
Stygma IV - i.n.r.i. [overture to jesus christ superstar] (A History In Pain)
Persuader - escape (The Hunter)
Again 13 tracks instead of "the holy number", 14. Why? Guča, Trubači, that's why. That's the bad news. The good news is, I think I found the correct album now and tagged it :-) Yeah.
Haddaway's 'desert prayer' was really cool by the way. Go listen to it if you can find it, great verse melody. Also, Muse were great as always, but a little depressing (love, anyone?), so let's quickly move on to Trio Exklusiv: Ennio Morricone Jazz is not exactly what this is, but it sounds interesting, doesn't it? I saw them live many years ago in Villach, and they are worth checking out. Nice cover version of Christina Aguilera's first single is up next, by Speedway. You might think at first that it's a little cheap, but it totally works.
The shortest interlude ever by Virgin Steele (22 seconds, ladies and gentlemen), and Arkona rule Today (by the way, with the same song you already had recently, Sacrifi-sir). This Hypocrisy song next is for example something I would NOT give to our Bosnian angel to represent "our" music. Na-ha.
It took me longer to write about Enthroned's epilogue than it actually was (a couple of synthie waves), before Norther sound quite typical and, yes, quite cool. Then Slayer live in 1984 - oh, how good they were back then. And how diabolical Tom Araya sounds... good old times. We stay on stage with Stygma IV from Salzburg and their evident talent and end with Persuader's demo track 'escape'.

Paola & Chiara - Win The Game

(So yes, this album has a silly title like all of their albums have)
Cool intro... God have I missed them.
Oh my God, great 80ies synthies on 'vanity & pride'! And their voices, oh the beauty! How cool and effortless they smoothly come over you and take you in and own you. And it's true, Chiara does sound a bit like Madonna when she's singing English. Have I mentioned how much I love their voices?
'second life' was the first single so I already knew it. I don't think it's that strong, but it has a nice disco bass that tries to lead the song. Nice one, but the chorus is strangely rushed and it's certainly not an attention grabber.
Oh, the production and the beats are awesome. I love how smooth and retro (in the best possible way) their dance tracks sound, and 'secret' is no exception. I'm already looking forward to listening to this album again and again and again, especially in summer, baby :-) Oh, summer... Also here it seems that they quote Madonna a bit (also in the lyrics). Which, just in case you're not aware of it, is one of the best things you can possibly do on this planet, in my opinion.
Oh I love these beats.
'cambiare pagina' then finally is in Italian again. I have to say, I like when they sing English on this album, but hell, Italian is still so much better. This track is beautiful and cool and their voices... oh, I already said that I think.
'rumors' sounds modern and fresh, they took the next step - this sounds unusual for them. Again Madonna-esque, although I can't explain it (it might just always be Chiara's voice). This is great and different and creative. I could cry... they are so brave.
By the way, I have to add that I am in no way objective about Paola & Chiara - I just love them too much.
Electro pop takes you in its arms again with 'i can't forget'. What else can I say? They just do it right on this album for me, this is what I want and they do it so so well.. It's so cool, but still driven. Awesome beats. But I think I'm repeating myself.
I think at this point I cannot say that this is a music revolution or even that it exceeds my expectations in a new P&C record. It's more the happiness and even euphoria that they actually did what I expected and continued with the electro pop (which seems to be my new happiness in life anyway, see Róisín Murphy's newest record which I adore).
A dancefloor that is rocking but still safe enough to hold your drink - is that something that your music should be? I don't care, 'morphine' is just that, and it's fucking good.
My lord, I love the way this is done. And with 'tu sei il futuro' we get further prove that singing the whole album in Italian would have been even greater, seriously. They just sound so promising, so mystical and sexy in Italian. 'buona stella' comes to mind at this point, a song from "Television" that went into this direction. It doesn't matter, I cannot bring myself to write about their evolution as singers and songwriters, it doesn't make any damn difference. The only thing that's important is that 'tu sei il futuro' sounds cool as the night and has them singing awesome melody lines. This song is big love.
Oh hell hell, those great beats that bring us '99 %'. If I could marry beats they would certainly be among the top ten to choose from. I think you will easily find 20 people who will say that this album is nothing special, boring, that there are hundreds of artists who do the same and that their English lyrics stay on a certain level that usually doesn't add anything useful to your life. But these people just don't get them, they haven't tried to read their Italian interviews with a heavy dictionary on their knees, they didn't look at their posters for years and they can't just accept that cool electro pop doesn't have to be "innovative" to function.
The outro says that the "official" part of the album is over now... on to the bonuses and add-ons.
We start with 'i'll be over you/turn the page' that remixes what we heard before. It sounds like a remix and it's nice, but I'm not falling in love.
Totally Madonna on 'back to the future' (which is - duh - the English version of 'tu sei il futuro'). And yes, even if they'd sing it in Dutch, this song makes you fall to your knees and thank God for your ears (and your style because you find it cool, and your brain because you get it).
This album is, above all, cool and still driven. I don't understand how this combination is possible, but that's what this is. If you don't find anything else that excites you here, Paola & Chiara's voices certainly will.
Then 'cambiar de página' (yep, Spanish version) and we're still in love.
We leave the record with 'electro me (ana b'koach)', and yes, here we say "Kabbalah" again I'm sure. And the oh so smart people will tell me why Kabbalah is in a way like Scientology. And I will tell them to leave me the hell alone because, even though I personally don't care about the Kabbalah, it's spirituality and spirituality is a good thing. (Scientology is not spirituality, don't even get me started).
But since this is about music and nothing else here (and thank God cause who cares about Scientology, and why did I even mention it), I can just go back to track number 1 and finally be with Paola & Chiara again. You just don't know how you miss them until you get a taste again.

Paola & Chiara - in viaggio (Ci Chiamano Bambine)
Tarkan - inci tanem (Tarkan)
Virgin Steele - we rule the night (Noble Savage)
Hypocrisy - unleash the beast (Into The Abyss)
Trivium - the rising (The Crusade)
Bon Jovi - save the world (Crush)
Catamenia - the era (Chaos Born)
Children Of Bodom - children of bodom (Hatebreeder)
Beherit - black arts (Drawing Down The Moon)
Léo Delibes - blanche dourqa, pâle siva! (Lakmé)
Sedativa - loud'n'everywhere (Forgotten Fun)
Catamenia - burning aura (Halls Of Frozen North)
Cubismo & Bolesna Braća - las grinas (Amigos)
Seamus Haji feat Kayjay - last night a dj saved my life (Kontor - House Of House Vol. 4)
Nice rock song by the "old" Paola & Chiara. As much as I loved them and still do, they've always had really silly album titles and still have (see "Win The Game"). But other than that, they rule. Beautiful ballad by Tarkan, and then Virgin Steele really rule the night with this one. Hypocrisy was also cool, Trivium I didn't quite understand, and Bon Jovi re-defined the word "kitsch". And it's a long song, believe me.
'the era' is an interlude (nice by the way), before Children Of Bodom rock today's Today. That's a damn great melody line, sir. Beherit, as expected, are a journey not only to, but into the moon that is pictured on the cover. A wonderfully old sounding recording of Lakmé follows (thanks Supul), and then a quite old Metal Hammer compilation gives me Sedativa, who sing a chorus that totally works, folks.
And then once more Catamenia, this time with a full track from their first album - typical and good. And now for something totally different: Cubismo & Bolesna Braća I think collaborate on this track to do some Croatian/Venezuelan shout-out at World Music (partly working). We end this session with my new love and desire, House music. Very nice production by Seamus Haji. "And if it wasn't for the music, I don't know what I'd do".

A really nice Black Metal song from Thyrane ends my Today today and with the partly sinister atmosphere that the song leaves in my ears I go to bed - yawn :).

everything represented in Today, versatile mix again ... nightquest, take me down, kheftiu asar butchiu and planeta eskoria giving the spice in today's 14 course musical menu, in league with satan the dish that you hide in your napkin after trying it for a bit and blaze of victory as dessert rounding up the menu

Madonna's new single, finally - how is it?
It's good. It's not revolutionary, and maybe, yes, maybe you expected even more of a collaboration including these names - Madonna, Timberlake, Timbaland: it's a promise of creativity and success.
And it is all that, and it is good. The beats are usual Timbaland style which means that they are great, they rule all, and they are very distinctive. Timberlake is nice, Madonna's vocals are nice. The verse is really cool, I think however that the chorus is a little weak. Timberlake's lines have already been sung by Michael Jackson 20 years ago. A good chorus is sooo important and they didn't make it. Maybe Madonna should give Soilwork a call for her next album.
Having said that, she's the Queen of Pop, and the Goddess, and the Holy Mother of Music. I can't wait until the album's out.

Judas Priest - leather rebel (Painkiller)
Morgenstern - es (Feuertaufe)
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - fra gli amplessi (Così fan tutte)
Raise Hell - holy target (Holy Target)
Stratovarius - the kiss of judas (Visions)
Voivod - tornado (Killing Technology)
Ancient Wisdom - postludium-his creation reversed (...And The Physical Shape Of Light Bled)
ABBA - i saw it in the mirror (Ring Ring)
In Flames - touch of red (Soundtrack To Your Escape)
Judas Priest - the green manalishi [with the two-pronged crown] [live] ('98 Live Meltdown)
Evergrey - nosferatu [live] (A Night To Remember)
W.A.S.P. - i wanna be somebody [live] (Live...In The Raw)
Celtic Frost - danse macabre (Morbid Tales)
Donovan - mellow yellow
This time I really just started Today, then left the PC to be able to just close my eyes, listen and maybe guess a couple of artists correctly.
The ones I got right: Priest (twice), Morgenstern, Mozart, Raise Hell, Stratovarius, Voivod, ABBA, W.A.S.P.
Faves were leather rebel, holy target, and the kiss of judas. Creepy was the Celtic Frost "interlude" thingy - creepy in any possible way you can imagine. Also featured were one of the weakest ABBA tracks, Donovan's ear glue mellow yellow and quite useless plink-plonk by Ancient Wisdom.

Metal Hammer, Vol. 125
I also listened to the latest Metal Hammer compilation today..
Dark Age - outside the inside
Quite nice, will give it another listen
Avantasia - shelter from the rain
Schlager Metal. Not bad :-) but Schlager Metal...
Draconian - seasons apart
I still like them a lot. Lisa Johansson sings very clear vocals (even a bit TOO clear if I'm picky), and Anders Jacobsson does some fabulous grunts. Good band.
Eluveitie - inis mona
Nice and well done, but I also have to say that this doesn't sound any different to me than the other billion songs from that genre
Legion Of The Damned - slaughtering the pigs
Just great
Death Angel - sonic beatdown
The first thing that comes to mind is the weird, one might say crappy, sound. The second thing that comes to mind is that this is weird. Acoustic beatdown indeed.
Dark Fortress - edge of night
Cool. More!
Atrocity - the sun always shines on tv
a-ha cover from "Werk 80 II". Gruesome vocals, I HATE German accents. I have to say I like cover versions (even whole cover albums) and I still like the idea and what Atrocity are trying to do here. But this blows. And hurts.
Norther - we rock
First of all: a little silly, this song title... This song had a couple of men shouting something in the background and the track length was 3:57.
Mourning Caress - nothing is lost
The vocals are exhausting, really. If the morning would caress me like that I'd be in big trouble.
Lost Dreams - i curse you
4 seconds in and it's clear: Melodic Death Metal. How exciting ;-) Wasn't bad
Made Of Hate - bullet in your head
They sound funny - quite rock, but in a way Melodic Death Metal. But then again, it's Heavy Metal with harsh vocals. All in all too upbeat for me today.

Tristania - aphelion (Beyond The Veil)
Megadeth - addicted to chaos (Youthanasia)
Finntroll - ur djupet (Ur Jordens Djup)
Connie Francis - romantica
Ceca - dragane moj (Decenija)
Sirenia - in my darkest hours (An Elixir For Existence)
L'Âme Immortelle - life will never be the same again (Dann habe ich umsonst gelebt)
Mortal Love - all the beauty (All The Beauty...)
Johnny Cash - come in stranger (This Is Gold)
Amr Diab - ba'ed el layali (Aktar Wahed)
Impaled Nazarene - i eat pussy for breakfast (Latex Cult)
Tristania - midwintertears (Tristania)
Candlemass - dark are the veils of death (Nightfall)
Howard Shore - the riders of rohan (The Lord Of The Rings: The Two Towers (Original Soundtrack))
I hate to concentrate on the negative, but: L'Âme Immortelle... "Dann habe ich umsonst gelebt", I can't judge that. But this song was definitely of no earthly use and "umsonst" recorded.
Other than that: music music music music music. Today = Love.

Emperor - Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk
Paradise Lost - Symbol Of Life
Emperor - In the Nightside Eclipse
Dragana Mirkovic - Trag u vremenu
great Emperor albums, gave me to power to endure the day :). Symbol of Life, I have absolutely no clue why I only gave 4 stars on RYM, I had to change that immediately to 5 after listening to songs like Isolate, Erased, Mistify ... erm every song is great. Some Folk in the end to chill and wait for the work day to end ...

The Impossibility Of Reason
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-ibQtF9E1wk)
I don't know - I was listening to Hande Yener's great "Nasıl Delirdim", and for the first time (well, not really, that's a lie) I've questioned my ability of doing reasonable ratings on RYM. Because: This is a great album, and even greater - if you think about it - knowing what Hande Yener did before the release of this album (and here I have to say that the predecessors were great as well). Those albums were awesome Turkish pop, but ""Nasıl" is an electronic dance album with (and I say that having no insight on electronic music whatsoever) cool beats and also, oldfashioned beats (that I LOVE).
So, it's great. And I gave it 4 stars when I rated it a couple of months ago. And I think that 4 stars sort of 'feels' right, but then again, it's too good to only have 4 stars. Or is it? Is it 4 or 4.5?
If you know the answer to this very important question, please mail to unholy.winter@gmail.com and save me in my time of need.
(I kept the rating for now - 4 stars. But I don't know if that's the right thing to do).
***
Additionally, I found out that not just one, but BOTH of the Take That tracks I actually like are covers! BOTH OF THEM! 'relight my fire', as we knew, is by Dan Hartman, and 'could it be magic' is by Barry Manilow! Now, I didn't know that... I heard it tonight on Donna Summer's "Anthology" album, and thought it would be originally hers, but coverinfo told me that the original is by Featherbed (which apparently was an alias of Manilow). Donna Summer and another thousand people covered this song, and that's not the end of it: it features a citation (I don't even know if you can use that for music, my English knowledge ends here) of Chopin's 'prelude in c minor'... well, I'm totally out of breath now and can say that - again - I learned something new about music, which is so much more important than having a vast knowledge of Austria's history and topography. But that's just my personal opinion.

Kubilay Bas participated in Austria's preliminaries for the Eurovision Song Contest in 2002 with this song. I only have a low quality radio rip, but I remember seeing this show on TV, and this was definitely the song I wanted to win (and marry). Great Turkish pop - this is just where I belong. Needless to say, Bas didn't win. Manuel Ortega and 'say a word' were sent to Tallinn to represent Austria. Well, we all know how that ended...
