The eternal question:
How to rate at Rateyourmusic?

Is this rating too high? Is it low enough if you don't like an album?

Let's have a look at 3 different rating "systems" and let's see if maybe something can be used:

*****************************
5.0 - Perfection
4.5 - Almost Perfect
4.0 - Really Good
3.5 - Pretty Good/Good
3.0 - Average
2.5 - Disappointing
2.0 - Pretty Bad/Bad
1.5 - Really Bad
1.0 - God Awful
0.5 - A Crime Against Music
*****************************
5.0 - Superb/perfect
4.5 - Awesome/exceptional
4.0 - Really good
3.5 - Good
3.0 - OK
2.5 - Could have been better
2.0 - Not good
1.5 - Disturbingly bad

3.5 - Decent
3.0 - Okay
2.5 - Average
2.0 - Below average
1.5 - Bad
1.0 - Awful
0.5 - Disgusting
*****************************

So, I need to make up my mind and get a bit of order in my ratings, cause - I like just rating how it "feels" to me, but then again... a bit of reason might not be a bad idea.

Madonna - Hard Candy

Madonna - Hard Candy Listening to the newest Madonna album for the 3rd time now, there are thousands of things that want to be said. Of course after so little time with the record, this can only be a first glance...

First of all, yes - Madonna is late to the party with Timbaland as producer. A billion artists have done this before, and it's certainly not innovative anymore. Anyone's doing it. As well as duet-ing with Justin Timberlake. So regarding this, I was exciting about hearing about this collaboration as well as disappointed, because frankly: we all expect Madonna to be innovative and revolutionary, and not to jump on the bandwagon. She did in this case.

Now, away from the blah blah. We all know that the only thing that really matters is the music. And here we have to name the excitement again: Madonna produced by Timbaland! And throw Timberlake and the great Neptunes in the mix as well-- To say that this sounds promising is the understatement of the year. Timbaland is a genius, and Madonna is a genius. So is this album genius?

Maybe not quite, but after two listens now, I think that
- it's fucking good
- it features amazingly great sounds and beats
- the electronica are a lot smarter than on "American Life"
- the lyrics are much better than on "Confessions On A Dancefloor"
- Timbaland's arrangements just rock

I mean, the sound of the first three tracks, 'candy shop', '4 minutes' and 'give it 2 me' alone are a whole new world of cool. These three are certainly favourites, as well as 'incredible' (which I didn't like so much at first listen because of the seemingly predictable melody line, but it totally takes off with the words "...Can't get my head around it" and becomes special), and also 'beat goes on' (great guest appearance by Kanye West - I especially love that he goes right to singing the chorus after his rap, well done). And not to forget the adorable 70ies sounds on 'she's not me'. Pharrell Williams' vocals are awesome as always, by the way. Honorable mention for the amazing synthies at the end of 'dance 2night' (oh, Timbaland, you never fail me). And then the closer, 'voices' - amazing melody lines, great instrumentation, and the arabic violins in the chorus.. awesome.

After these first craven rounds, I think that all of the twelve tracks have something. I don't believe there's a filler on here, because songs that seemed a bit weaker to me ('miles away' for example, or maybe 'spanish lesson') are all worth being on this record.

Yeah, I do think that this album is a grower, as the single was. I do believe that after giving it more spins, I will not only really like this, I will probably fall in love.

Funny how I felt at first listen that, if this record was by someone else than Madonna, I would have been even more excited. I guess this just means that I expect a lot from Madonna. And she has not disappointed me. This is not a musical revolution, not as innovative as "Music" was (featuring breathtaking "French disco"/electronica). But it's a damn great album by the Queen of Pop, and I know that I will spend lots of beautiful hours listening to it. The Goddess has blessed us once again.

"Raw, sticky and sweet"

Thunderstone - land of innocence (Tools Of Destruction)
Nine Inch Nails - the only time (Pretty Hate Machine)
God Dethroned - a view of ages (Bloody Blasphemy)

Saturday morning, the sun partly breaks through the clouds, the smell of fresh made coffee what else fills the room and the first thing to do after the PC slowly starts up is opening Mediamonkey and switch to Today. The first three songs guide me already to the sinister world of metal with Dark Lunacy, Death and one of all time favorite among the Black Metal. This is a bonus track from the remastered version and I tell ya they have a touch of composing dark and kinda sinister romantic creation like Opus a Satana.
I like the music from Justin Timberlake, maybe its bit too often on the Radio especially in the morning when my radio alarm clock fires up with his lastest hit. That is probably a bad connection, 'cause im usually in a foul mood when getting up. Everytime I listen to one of Kamelot's song I compare it to my all time favorite song Karma and none of em surpassed Karma. It' s still nice to listen to those songs, nice atmosphere and relaxing. Siebenbürgen is a blank sheet of paper in my Metal diary, apart from that I had them already once in Today and Sapnish and me thought its Tristania. This song was darker though and I should listen to more songs of em.
Nothing less from Today, God Dethroned as the closing track and what a song taken from Blood Blasphemy.

Paradise Lost - symbol of life (Symbol Of Life)
Tori Amos - strange little girl (Strange Little Girls)
Eurythmics - sweet dreams [are made of this]
AC/DC - sin city (Powerage)
Enslaved - hal valr (Yggdrasill)
Nadide Sultan - konyalım [remix]
Testament - burnt offerings (The Legacy)
50 Cent feat Mobb Deep - outta control
Elvis Presley - i got a woman (Classic Elvis)
Halford - made in hell [live] (Live Insurrection)
Ray Charles - child support & alimony (Would You Believe?)
Saxon - burning wheels (Dogs Of War)
Thunderstone - feed the fire (Tools Of Destruction)
Tori Amos - wednesday (Scarlet's Walk)

It never occured to me before, but "Symbol Of Life"'s title track really carries the spirit of "Host" - great strings. Tori Amos' cover of 'strange little girl' features amazing guitars in the chorus, cool track. The Eurythmics is without a doubt a piece of Pop art, AC/DC sound like AC/DC (= incredibly cool) and behind the rumbling of this old Enslaved recording - well hidden - was a quite interesting track.

Oh, TURKISH POP. I cannot live without Turkish Pop. I would never want to try.

The Testament track wasn't bad and I think, if there is a Testament album that coooould maybe work for me, it must be "The Legacy". 'outta control' is one of my favourite Hip Hop tracks ever - so cool, with such a nice flow... "I get the club jumpin', cause I'm sick with the flow". Great, great tune. As the album title says, Elvis sings a classic rock'n'roll song then, before true Elvis adorer Rob Halford sings a true Metal track, originally from his "comeback" album "Resurrection". The only thing you could complain about here is that there is zero live atmosphere. Nada. Yes, there is "ohohoho" by the audience, but still...

"Would You Believe?" just doesn't work for me - this track is quite okay though. And Saxon played Heavy Metal, and Thunderstone did as well (nice riff). And Tori Amos tag teams us with 'wednesday'. Great round today. Again :-)

Judas Priest - nostradamus

http://www.judaspriest.com/nostradamus/default.asp

The title track of the upcoming new album is available! Uaaahhh! How is it??

Quite promising so far! The guitar work is great and it's so very obvious, from the guitars alone, that this is not just standard Metal they want to play on this album. The intro is pompous as necessary, Halford's vocals are fine and they sound like Priest. The guitars in the verse even sound a bit like Slayer, and the chorus is very epic, as it should be considering the subject. While this track is certainly not an immediate hit, it is indeed: promising.

Madonna, Metallica, Priest - this should be an interesting year in music.

--Sapnish--

I can only agree here, just listening to this one song ignites a desire to hear the rest of the double album. Great guitar work, vocals and all in all it presents this atmosphere that I expect given the subject of Nostradamus, especially in the part where the keyboard lead over to the solo of the song.

Metal Hammer Vol. 127

In Flames - alias
Nice, but not the best track on the new album. No Death Metal at all we have here.

Deicide - in the eyes of god
Grunts, anyone? Very propulsive, but not remarkable it seems at first listen.

Emil Bulls - the most evil spell
Earwrenching vocals, but then with a nice, typical single-chorus.

Debauchery - continue to kill
Grunts, anyone? More interesting than Deicide's track, very gory.

Belphegor - bondage goat zombie
The best track on here in my opinion. Very unique, great songwriting.

Textures - old days born anew
Tricky to grasp with only one listen, might be worth giving a try.

Warrel Dane - messenger
Absolutely redundant.

Dezperadoz - days of thunder
Fun, and well done. Average track with a cool wild west wink.

Children Of Bodom - blooddrunk
Not bad, also not out of the ordinary. I could have done without the 'blooddrunk' gang shouts as well...

Trinacria - travel now journey infinitely
I don't know if this is cool or unbearable. I have to listen to it again... The vocals reminded me a bit of Godgory.

My Uncle The Wolf - march of the hung
Cool and tilted dark rock track. And a great band name. Maybe a bit too long... (the song, not the band name)

Testament - more than meets the eye
Just how they usually are.. Okay riffs and all in all not very exciting. If only they'd make more ballads... ('trail of tears' = love)

Discard - pulse
Hmmm? Did anyone press a button?

Dimmu Borgir - the insight and the catharsis (Spiritual Black Dimensions)

Def Leppard - have you ever needed someone so bad (Vault)

The heavenly, um, I mean, infernal 'the insight and the catharsis' was the one track that opened my mind to Black Metal. This song was featured on a Metal Hammer sampler, and after I listened to it, the world had changed. After "Spiritual Black Dimensions" I was caught, I gave my soul to Black Metal. These infernal melodies, the edge of madness between the darkest of Metal and the beautiful melodies, and Simen's and Shagrath's vocals - this song was the gate to a new and fascinating landscape, and I will never leave again. Thank you, Dimmu Borgir.
"Rigid father, teach me how to comprehend
I'll commit myself to understand"

From one of my alltime faves to another one of my alltime faves. "Erotica" is an incredibly strong and creative album that was ahead of its time in 1992, and is almost as fantastic as its successor "Bedtime Stories". 'waiting' is lucious and close to perfection, and I hope and pray that Madonna's new album will again be a precursor, as the two mentioned, or "Ray Of Light", or "Music", and nobody will be able to ignore it as it must become essential for music history. The possibility is certainly there with Timbaland and Timberlake as producers, even though I have to say that the term "precursor" does not apply if you read about the idea on paper because twenty thousand artists were faster in collaborating with them. But, that doesn't mean that it can't be music history... We'll see shortly!

Six Feet Under's "Warpath" is the only album by the Death Metal cult band that I really like. Also 'animal instinct' was featured on a metal sampler, and I hated it at first (I had absolutely no interest in Death Metal at that time). But giving it a couple of more listens I felt a strange fascination with the songwriting and also the vocals. Chris Barnes doesn't sound as "abysmal" as on other albums, and he still uses the higher croaking in the chorus of this track. The fact that the chorus "a vicious lust for blood" was alternately used in either the left or the right channel made the song really interesting with headphones. Sacrifi-sir, I know you had bad experiences with that band, but maybe you wanna check out their Rock'n'Roll album, "Warpath", at some point. For me it worked! :-)

What can you say about 'mirror mirror'? All words must fade in the face of this Metal classic. This was the first Guardian song I've ever heard (it's a lot of "firsts" today so far), I didn't immediately like it. I wasn't used to Epic Metal and thought it was strangely rushed. But of course, I couldn't forget it and had to listen it again and again, and I had to have the album. Their unique sound is something that has always fascinated me, and as "Nightfall..." was my first Blind Guardian album it is of course my favourite. An amazing hymn off an album that can hardly described with words. At this point, Guardian were at their peak and created eternal, epic metal. Every song is a miracle here, and 'mirror mirror' is their king.

Wow Today, what are you smoking? You are totally choosing favourites today! 'the hellion/electric eye' is such a Metal classic, an incredibly cool and creative track. "Screaming For Vengeance" is in the Metal Bible, and everyone should know it. The fact that Priest are magical is undeniable. There are still albums I just cannot learn to appreciate, but this albums - amongst many other Priest records I adore - is Heavy Metal 101. Fantastic songwriting and Rob Halford's vocals brought us a perfect album. And thankfully, not for the last time in Priest's history.

With Subway To Sally I have finally some time to breathe again, because I can take a break from all the hymns of praise. Because this was a song, and then it was over. I'm not a big fan of the band, but they have lots of better stuff in my opinion.

Sigh are "Wahnsinns-Metal" from Japan ;-) I don't think there's a genre that they haven't used for their albums, and they are really worth checking out (if you have strong nerves that is). This was simply a piano interlude, nice, but even nicer in the context of the whole album I'm sure.

Bittersweet gypsy music can never be wrong, and this sampler guarantees for high quality - this song is no exception, even if it's not breathtaking. I by the way want to offically state that the violin is a fabulous instrument.

"Evil Empire" is definitely weaker than their debut "Rage Against The Machine", but on the other hand it's amazing how unique this band sounds. And pissed. They had so much to say back then, and packed it in some of the irresistible New Metal (or Crossover as it was called back then) riffs in history. I'm not that much into Funk Rock, so I can say that I think that wah-wah guitars have never sounded better than they did back then by this band.

I'm a big fan of the sound created between Black and Death Metal - Dissection's masterpiece "Storm Of The Light's Bane" may be the most famous represantative. The always cold sound and the best of both worlds not only make the named gift of God essential, but also all/most of Naglfar's releases (I couldn't really give the band as much time as I would have wanted so far, so I will not pass this judgement). If you like this style of music they are a must have, very original in that "small" area that they work in, very well-crafted, intense and dark.

'mexican radio' is a song that is always mentioned when talking about Celtic Frost's descend/rise (however you wanna look at it) into a more progressive phase. It's a Wall Of Voodoo cover, and before I try to go to the depths of this release and its meaning for the metal community: I don't get Celtic Frost. I adore 'tristesses de la lune' which was a bonus track for this album, but apart from that, none of their songs have ever sparked a flame. While I can appreciate some of their work, I don't mind NOT listening to it either, and if you feel like stopping "Into The Pandemonium" half way through, that's fine with me. Totally fine.

Therion. My endless love. 'siren of the woods' leaves you, like most of their "newer" material, with a loss for words. Christopher Johnsson is a composer in the true sense of the word. Both the studio version and this live version are unbelievable, and at no point in my life was I able to listen to this without feeling showers of fear and wonder on my skin, and without feeling a certain longing for the woods. Karin Fjellander here may sing this even a bit better (for my taste) than Anja Krenz on the studio album "Theli" because her soprano is more powerful and, if you will, more 'womanly' (I appreciate Krenz' version as well though). Johan Nieman provides a flawless bass. The lyrics are in Akkadian by the way, and - as always with this band - worth a read.

Chuck Berry then sings a classic Rock'n'Roll track that seems to be (lyrically as well as musically) a follow-up to 'johnny b. goode'. Not as good as that hit and a little too forced. I didn't feel a lot of Rock in my Roll in this case..

Then, lots of slime and honey poured out of my speakers, and luckily this was the last song because everything was sticky and smudged after this! I don't know what it was, maybe something in the speakers melted and ---oh no wait, it was just this Def Leppard ballad. Hardly got through it. There are great Hard Rock ballads on this planet, and they show their naked behind to 'have you ever needed someone so bad', and they laugh at it.
