2 minutes to midnight (live 2002)
IRON MAIDEN / rock in rio
Probably not among my very favorite Maiden tracks, but hearing it here as the opener of today’s playlist I did enjoy it very much. All well here, apart from the misplaced “Scream for me Rio de Janeiro” calls - wasn’t the right time to do this Bruce, and yes, we can’t help but feel you’ve overused it a bit.
the abyss of your eyes
STRATOVARIUS / visions
For the life of me, I don’t understand why I like “Visions” so much less than the other albums. It’s supposed to be their best and most loved, even outside of the Melodic Metal fan base, and still it doesn’t click for me. Apart from the amazing ‘kiss of judas’ I just don’t love it, and this song was no exception.
lunge da lei - de’ miei bollenti spiriti
GIUSEPPE VERDI / la traviata (salzburg 2005)
Mmm, La Traviata. Exquisite of course, and this take was pretty amazing anyway (Anna Netrebko and Rolando Villazón in Salzburg). ‘bollenti’ is not my favorite aria here, but there is no weak moment in Traviata.
lucifer speaks
SECRETS OF THE MOON / antithesis
Hmmyeah, this was quite long-winded, not really my thing. They create a really pitch black atmosphere, but can never keep me interested.
for once in my life
FRANK SINATRA / new york new york: his greatest hits
Wow what a creative title for this compilation - kudos…
What should I say about Sinatra? Wonderful.
yolanda
ORCHESTRA BAOBAB / a night at club baobab
Cool how Salsa done well makes me miss our summer nights momentarily. Oh well…
get away
GEORGIE FAME
I have this on a “Time Life” compilation and could have sworn this was recorded in the 80s. Do I have a re-recording of this? In any way, what is this, boogie? That don’t impress me much, as Shania Twain said.
from the transcendental starry sky
ARS MANIFESTIA / the enchanting dark’s arrival
Oh boy, the sound. Makes it so hard to hear this “Symphonic Black Metal” thing. I guess they wanted to pick up where “In the Nightside Eclipse” ended, but… 9 minutes with this kitchen appliance sound was just not so pleasant.
on the move (dumonde mix)
BARTHEZZ / club sounds vol. 17
Yes kids, this is what the 00s sounded like. Not bad what this Barthezz kid did here, even if predictable.
this i know
JULIETTE AND THE LICKS / you’re speaking my language
Not her best song I guess, a bit cheesy.
sure know something
KISS / dynasty
One of my faves by Kiss, a good rocker. Nice to hear this again.
what will become
FEAR FACTORY / digimortal
Solid song by the Industrial Metal stars - made me want to listen to Korn again though, is that odd?
ich will ‘nen cowboy als mann
GITTE / deutsche schlager vol. 1
Jaha! I know this from Radio Kärnten of course. Not bad, even though a bit annoying with the speech samples. Well and that Gitte can sing.
born in africa
DR. ALBAN / the very best of 1990-1997
I never liked this so much, it kind of doesn’t really do much with the given ideas. It’s a bit bland for my taste.
