Dark Lunacy - frozen memory (Devoid)
Nile - i whisper in the ear of the dead (In Their Darkened Shrines)
Apocalyptica - no education (Reflections)
Bathory - song to hall up high (Hammerheart)
The Doors - been down so long (L.A. Woman)
Judas Priest - united (British Steel)
Erwin Bolt - meine oma fährt motorrad (100 Gassenhauer)
Nawal El Zoughbi - kalam ellail (The Best Arabian Album In The World... Ever!)
Frank Zappa - jones crusher (Sheik Yerbouti)
Blut Aus Nord - the last journey of ringhorn (Ultima Thulée)
Chimaira - lazarus (Chimaira)
Scheitan - the scheitan (Berzerk 2000)
Tom Waits - downtown (Heartattack And Vine)
Antonio Vivaldi - I - allegro (Concerto per Mandolino, Archi e Cembalo C-Dur RV 425)

Dark Lunacy from Italy are solid Death Metal, but with the specific feature that they use classical instruments (accordion, violin, viola, cello). This track almost goes without this particuliarity, but nevertheless it's a very good and intoxicating Metal track - female vocals and solemn middle section included. Ah, Nile again - this band works incredibly well for me at the moment. This track carrying one of the best song titles ever is more of an interlude, but very intense and 100 % Nile (like every moment of this great album). Quite unimpressive then 'no education' from one of the newer Apocalyptica albums. I don't like the drums on this one, and - unlike 'i whisper in the ear of the dead' - this is one of the silliest song titles. Very atmospheric then an acoustic excursion to a very influential record - Bathory's "Hammerheart" was a blueprint for the feel of hundreds of Viking/Folk Metal bands to come. Not even Quorthon's jolty vocals can chill the fire this album has sparked in thousands of Metal heads. Even if I'm not one of them, I appreciate that and understand more with every listen.

Not my favourite track or album by The Doors follows, the stomping beat doesn't appeal to me so much - or rather, this is not how I'd like The Doors to sound. And they are doing something quite annoying with the guitar in the last third of the song :-( The next song is quite corny I guess, but I love it. This is just a nice message and a catchy tune, love it. United we stand - united we never shall fall! Oh boy, the Gassenhauer again. This time, Erwin Bolt desribes how his grandma is riding a motorbike. Except for the apparent nostalgia - not much. Next one please. Much nicer and feeling much more familiar then the next tune, Nawal El Zoughbi from Lebanon. She has a beautiful voice and this song is built upon a very interesting beat - oh, Arabic music, be with me, forever. Making me happy can be so easy sometimes, although this song is not an apparent hit.

Obviously, the music history quotations make Frank Zappa's music much more relevant - understanding none of that (I'm a total Zappa zero) this song was rather bizarre, but cool. Blut Aus Nord are, besides Deathspell Omega, THE new unconventional Black Metal band from France. Without a doubt, I prefer Blut Aus Nord, although I have to say I only know this album, which was their first. I'm not familiar with Deathspell's first releases. This song is very atmospheric, amazingly interesting in combination with the great cover. There's a lot to discover here, I'm sure. Vastly creative and leaves you wanting more. 'lazarus' is first of all a great song title and starts off with a good, modern Metal riff. And that's what you get. Lots of energy, I'm still not a big fan of the vocals though. All in all average stuff. Ok, so "Berzerk 2000" was, I think, the not-so-crazy-yet second album - you know, in between the almost not crazy one and the totally crazy one. 'the scheitan' is noise, and the way this upsurge of sound is created does make you listen... and frown. Definitely not something I want to come up if I'm having some people over and choose "random" on MediaMonkey. The last third of the song is an oscillating beast.

The distinctive voice of Tom Waits then takes us downtown. This is a groovy little song, almost too cool to exist. Although I have to say I always want to clear my throat when he's singing. A classical ending :-) I know this from somewhere... Vivaldi embraces lightness in this concerto for mandolin from 1725. I think the cembalo is underappreciated - thank God for bands like Rhapsody for keeping it alive :-) And the mandolin rules all (see Indira's 'april'). Nice piece of music by the Venetian composer. And nice Today! I do love you, Today, and don't forget it.

Maria Callas - ombra leggera (Il Perdono Di Ploermel; Giacomo Meyerbeer)
Mediæval Bæbes - e volentieri (Undrentide)
Djelem - codru (Gypsy Caravan)
Cathedral - blue light (The Carnival Bizarre)
Megadeth - take no prisoners (Rust In Peace)
Primal Fear - into the future (Jaws Of Death)
Naked Lunch - lost it all (Songs For The Exhausted)
Deftones - change [in the house of flies] (White Pony)
Doloris & The Ronelles - the lounge medley (Sister Act Original Soundtrack)
Die Apokalyptischen Reiter - the almighty (Soft & Stronger)
Enforsaken - cloaked in need (The Forever Endeavor)
Vintersorg - a dialog with the stars (Cosmic Genesis)
Beto Vazquez Infinity - through times part I (Infinity)
Dead Can Dance - song of the dispossessed (Spiritchaser)

Very famous is today's start, 'ombra leggera' from Meyerbeer's "Le Pardon de Ploërmel", or here, the Italian version. I'm unsure which is the "original", since the aria is famous in Italian, but the Opera title seems to be written in French in most cases. Ahimè, you want to say, what does it matter. This aria sung by La Callas is a piece of heaven, and that should be enough to ask for on a Sunday afternoon. "Undrentide" is not the strongest album of this English all-female ensemble, but undoubtedly, this sound and mood can only be the Bæbes. They feel very unique and granted, this does not suit every moment of the day or sometimes not even any week of the month. But when it does, this group is one of the few ones that take me back in time and do it almost kitsch-less. Naturalism, spiritualism, eroticism, romanticism.

A track from the great "Gypsy Caravan" compilation then continues the journey. This is nice, laid-back, with a touch of something that can be melancholy as well as contentment, and those two can - in a strange way - sometimes go hand in hand. "The Carnival Bizarre" is an album that I haven't really listened to so far. 'blue light' sounds very seventies, I like the Bass in this one, not so much Lee Dorian's vocals. Although Cathedral were very good in each of their different phases, I do think that I prefer the early doom albums over the rockier ones. But one has to say that their creativity, shown not only in album art but also in the lyrics and song titles, is breathtaking. Megadeth's "Rust In Peace" was their last Thrash Metal album, they entered their "middle phase" after this like so many other Thrash bands have as well. 'take no prisoners', as the whole album, doesn't totally work for me. I can't get used to the odd sound and especially this song is undeniable craftsmanship, not uncool, but not gripping.

Metal reigns again with Primal Fear and their second album. I enjoyed this song and the impellent beat. Nice slightly disconnected chorus, that's an interesting Heavy Metal track - typical, yet still steering around the obvious clichés. Klagenfurt's Naked Lunch then try to trip us up with a stumbling beat. This is without a doubt a sad album, maybe hopelessly sad. This does not totally fail its purpose on a grey Sunday, but didn't emblaze a new fire - I felt it to be too normal sounding to do that. The Deftones definitely deserve my attention, I own "White Pony", but didn't listen to it yet. They sound very modern (of course), very powerful but too troubled and despaired to use the power to pull themselves together and make something of the day. This is an approach I appreciate and can relate to, and I felt close to this song without getting to know it better.

Enough with the hanging heads then with one of those movies that aren't really what you'd call "good", but you've seen them twenty times and they make you happy. This is from the beginning of the film, where Doloris is performing Soul classics with her two background singers. Nice medley, well done and great songs to interpret. Very funny the speed-up at 'i will follow him' - sounds like Nicko McBrain is playing drums and putting his co-musicians in real trouble as they have to keep up with him :-) The following Reiter-album is their first, and altough I know nothing of the band's music (but I should) even I know that this was more straight edge Death Metal than their praised later albums. Was nice to listen to, the piano parts enhance the atmosphere. The Chicago based Melodic Deathers Enforsaken then play a Scandinavian sounding song with good melodies and the typical Melodic Death vocals that I can't really relate to (yet). Certainly not a bad effort, enjoyable and nice to listen to.

'a dialogue with the stars' is better than I remembered it to be, there are hints of absentmindedness in the songwriting, but in this case they make the song quite interesting. Vintersorg is not on my long list of favourite artists, but this song is a small hit, great chorus. Then along trolls a piping interlude from Beto Vazquez (I'm in the woods), before Dead Can Dance lead us to a strange place where sad people listen to toned-down flamenco beats. Incedible approach, and it works very well. Impressive.

Already looking forward to listen to this well balanced list.

Nice tracks by In Extremo, One Hundred Steps, Dark Fortress - Today wasn't as diverse as last time, but why should it, Today is its own master and may do whatever it feels like doing. Amazing as always Indira - my God that woman rocks.
Fates Warning are so incredibly interesting, their first albums cry for discovery, and they have this awesome Maiden-like 80ies sound.

Obviously, Today also wanted to highlight the Dies Irae album "Sculpture Of Stone". I think the songs were okay, but not really that impressive. But alas, if Today says so, please note that album :-)

Elvis Presley - can't help falling in love (Love Me Tender)

Kreator - nonconformist (Outcast)

Oh boy, is there a better way to start tonight's Today than the King himself? No. He is still the greatest, and he will still be the greatest in a hundred years. He had it all, and although this song is not amoung my top favourites, of course there shouldn't be a person on this planet who could resist this romantic, perfectly delivered kitsch hit. 'stronger than all' is a very good track from the second Hammerfall album. They still sounded fresh back then. Granted, "Legacy Of Kings" was nowhere near as good as the once-in-a-hundred-years event "Glory To The Brave", but it was a quite strong album. Despite some nice songs on the follow-ups, I think it went downhill from there, the compositions just don't have it anymore and they don't sound as creative anymore to my ears. This is damn good Heavy Metal, and thanks to the unique voice of Joacim Cans, they preserved their own individual style which is not easy as a "True Metal" band, fighting in a genre where you'd think everything has been said already. Well, it hasn't.

The next song is a very famous tune, used in commercials (I think a car commercial) and also for example in the movie "Coyote Ugly". This is a nice track by this British band, who didn't have any other songs at all, did they? By the way, google says EMF stands for "Epsom Mad Funkers". I guess they are better off with the abbreviation ;-) I don't own the album the next track is taken from, I have it as "bonus" track of "Viki", or "Mariš li" (it's so difficult with "official" album titles in the Balkan states). This is very fine Turbofolk, a little less dynamic than the newer productions (the record is from 1998). When else can I say - she has a cool voice, and this is my kind of music. Next up, Ladies and Gentleman, is the first album I ever bought on CD! I loved Ace Of Base in this phase, and I remember very well how confused I was at this track. It was called 'münchhausen (just chaos)', and the chorus sort of was one of the boys (I always imagined it to be Jonas, but now I think it was actually Ulf) shouting "Just chaos, just chaos". So, what was I to do with that? Definitely not among the best tracks on that album, but I think I have opened my mind a little towards it a little. Strange composition.

Then we comfortably shiver as the Benedictine Monks of Santo Domingo chant their spiritual chorals. And this is the keyword here: spiritual. This is not about religion, or it doesn't have to be. It's what beyond all that, it is what unifies us all. It's spirituality. And funny enough, next up are Satyricon, and again: it's spirituality. Like the Benedictine Monks before, Satyricon want to spiritually evolve through music. Don't tell them I've compared them to monks though! Thanks. 'delirium' is one of the slower, maybe less approachable tracks from their newest album. Partly it feels like lava that blazes its trail through stones and mud, but what remains is a fascinating piece of music. The faster parts vibrate masterly and the song remains incredibly interesting. By the way, this is an awesome album title. Satyricon deserve nothing but respect for the way they follow their very own vision of Black Metal. Anathema are a special band for me - their album "Alternative 4" has stayed with me through some confusing times, and they wrote some of the saddest songs I know. 'the beloved' is from the 1998 album "Eternity" that I don't know that well. Not unlike Paradise Lost, they've turned from Death/Doom Metal to Dark Metal/Rock, and this album is their "Shades Of God": it's the turning point, and with ex-guitar player and new vocalist Vincent Cavanagh, clear vocals were introduced. Also not unlike Paradise Lost, who's "Shades Of God" I'm ashamed that I still don't totally understand, I didn't totally understand this track here either.

'yesterday lies in the flames' is off the balad disc of the "Essential Collection". I've heard a quite scary Ten ballad some days ago, so I was pleasantly surprised at this song. It's a nice ballad and the lyrics are about - what do you know - "I need you so", and yada yada. And of course, as if it needs to be said, Gary Hughes has a great voice. Nice Hard Rock solo, too. And I was surprised to learn that ex-Paradise Lost drummer Lee Morris can be heard on this album. "Visions Of Eden" totally flew under the radar, I never heard of it again after release. The first thing I think of is, as always with this band, the sound. If you had a better sound, oh Mastermind David deFeis, this would be great. But you don't, so we are left with typical Virgin Steele melody lines, deFeis' distinctive voice and a pathos-heavy, well done epic with a good chorus. Not the most motivating album title is then presented by L'Âme Immortelle. I have to say, the variety of genres Today picked this time is pretty amazing. This band is one of the cult acts in Darkwave/Gothic. This song sounds very typical, has morbid lyrics and is not bad. Might take another listen as it wasn't as catchy as I was hoping after hearing the first minute.

Okay, this next song was never officially released or something. I taped it from the British comedy series "French & Saunders". Why? Because I have never heard (and seen!) something quite as amazing as French & Saunders' musical parodies. As in most cases, Jennifer Saunders is singing this, and I can never believe how much she always sounds like the singer she's impersonating. Incredibly funny and impressive, and props to the genius who writes the songs - the songs in those parodies are originals, yet they sound exactly like the band and also exactly like the decade they were supposedly written in. I cannot praise this enough - Jen sounds just like Celine Dion in this, and the song is actually great... So, Today honey, this time it's Virgin Steele? Well, bring it! :-) This is from the second part of "The House Of Atreus", where deFeis deals with "Oresteia", the famous Greek tragedy. Great stuff for a Metal album, and I have a weak spot for the two "House Of Atreus" albums. Again, very typical Virgin Steele track, mediocre production in my humble opinion, but interesting and very epic stuff. To wrap it up, some "modern" Thrash Metal. Kreator have returned to a more traditional sound, but back in 1997 they were aiming towards a more modern interpretation of Thrash. I remember this being praised by the (or at least "some") critics, but 'nonconformist' sounds more like a cover version for a B-Side. Nothing special, and I recall not liking the rest of this album a lot more either.

Is it just me or is this getting longer and longer? Please, let's not make a rule that says "Thou shalt not rant" - I'd be in big trouble.

The Offspring - jennifer lost the war (Self Esteem)

Starting with Amorphis and a Track from their first album, Chapters is a best of Compilation, Warriors Trial is originally taken from The Karelian Isthmus(1993). Seems Today wants to point to an album that I have to listen to, this song guides the listener through finest Death Metal, melodic and parts filled with dark atmosphere. Luckily its saturday and this album is definately on the playlist for this afternoon.
From the lands near the Finnish Golf (Karelian Isthmus) to Egypt and one of its musicians, who can rightfully claim to be the Robbie Williams of Egypt(a good friend described him this way). Amareen is a good Pop song that has all the oriental flair that you would expect from an Egyptian song and still could easily compete with the "common" Pop songs that are broadcasted over the radio 24/7. I just wish that there would a few radio stations that would read that and add this kind of songs to their playlists ...
Today presents me Arch Enemy and a song from Wages of Sin, first appearance of their current singer Angela Nathalie Gossow, who performs very well in this album. The song itself is solid and has some catchy drum parts. Following by shivers from Dio's Master of the Moon, a touch of doom in this song. I cant follow the lyrics in this song though ... "If I had a nightmare, I'm sure that I would know". Ah well ... a classic song and this time its not at the end :), features a solid flute solo. Next is a cover by La Bouche from an all-time classic "I cant stand the rain", originally by Ann Peebles and I often covered by several artists. Dont wanna discredit La Bouche, as they approach this song from a different direction as just copying text and melody, but after I had listened to their version and switched to the original one I couldnt remember the one from La Bouche anymore. Ann Peebles, such an amazing voice in this song that it gives me goose-bumps.
Cold ... listening to this song didnt bring up this natural feeling, I couldnt follow the duett parts, one nice guitar solo in the middle of the song.

O mighty Today, how long have I been waiting for that you present me with a song from Paradise Lost and finally ...(dramatic scene, lightning from above and deep voice saying)
Thou shalt not demand songs from Today, the unholy powers within Today are blessing you with songs ... dont whine and listen !

Back to Paradise Lost after this example of my dramatic talent, well guess quite poor one :). I dont where to start, but I worship this band so much and im so glad that a good friend introduced me this band. Eternal(Gothic) is a masterpiece, amazing vocals from Nick Holmes, an intensity in his voice that let the air freeze surrounding you. Mackintosh accompanies this song with phenomenal play on the guitar. This album rightfully sets a milestone in music history and is the fundament of many more gothic metal albums to come. I bow deeply before this band and its music ...
A solid Black Metal song from Ragnarok is next, the middle part amazed me a bit, quite well done. Another all-time classic, you make me feel like dancing, in my list and I feel like being ported back to the 70s (a nice video on youtube, Leo Sayer).
How soon is now, originally by The Smiths and covered as intro track for the TV series Charmed is next on my list and of course the tune is familiar as you just couldnt pass this series when you are watching TV. On a side note, this song has been covered by Paradise Lost as well and you find a version here (How soon is now), just wish Id had a better version as just the youtube one.

After 2 coffee I close this for today and go off to shops, as usual the fridge is empty on weekend :)

Haggard - chapter II: the final victory (Awaking The Centuries)
Highlord - breath of eternity (Breath Of Eternity)
Alfred Polansky - welscher tanz (Der Sänger am gläsernen Meer)

Mason vs Princess Superstar - exceeder (Firstclass 2007 - The Finest In House)

Without a doubt Melanie C's best album, Northern Star, opens today's Today. Ähm. You know what I mean. The title track we have here is an okay ballad, I like the the faster songs a lot more on this album. This was back in 1999 an album I really liked, but everything she did afterwards (that I've heard) was somewhere between meaningless and earthshatteringly annoying. What can you say about Melechesh, one of the most innovative, exciting and creative extreme bands. This song is amazing, the arabesk flair they create is so unique in the way it's enmeshed in those great, dark Metal riffs they write. I cannot resist anything that is arabesk anyway, and Melechesh of course are no exception. An unbelievable band for countless hours of expedition through the mind and soul of music.

And now for something totally different :-) From Israel's dunes to St. Veit's Carinthian hills and rivers. A little too cheerful for me, I like the melancholic Carinthian folk songs more. But it sounds like home, and St. Veit is one of my favourite cities, so this was a very nice surprise. Very exalted then Haggard's Awaking The Centuries - a very nice album presenting us "mediaeval Metal". Haggard are somewhat underrated, they really do create a great atmosphere. This 'chapter II' is more of an interlude, but it still sounds eventful and epic. You know what, Today? If you wanna know how I liked 'breath of eternity', please just scroll - you chose it for me already a few days ago... So I take it you like the song as well, don't you? :-) Yeah, it's still great. What a magnificent chorus!

Alfred Polansky is an excellent guitar player and this album consits of acoustic instrumentals, some with Spanish flair, some mediaeval tunes like this one. Great stuff and no fillers, if I recall correctly. Nirvana's unplugged cover of the Meat Puppets' 'oh me' is then another highlight. A laid-back live document of a great band and a great emotion that finally swallowed itself. Next up is a song from a collection of 30ies/40ies Chansons. Humble sound as expected, but I swear, you close your eyes and sit outside one of those tiny cafes with even tinier chairs and tables in Paris and watch the beautful people walking by. In 1947. Then Azam Ali sings of other worlds. The Iranian singer did an album full of electronica, ambient and of course a touch of Arabia here, and although it sometimes lacks the ability to just grab you by the scruff of your neck (like similar songs by Irina Mikhailova do for example), this is undoubtely beautiful music. I would have appreciated more Arabian influences though, and of course Arabian lyrics.

"The Dock Of The Bay" is a very very strong album by 60ies soul singer Otis Redding. Also this track, although not among his strongest in my opinion, is cool and has rhythm - what a hero! Again, Today gives me Killah Priest, this time it's a track where he disses other MC's (the "fake" ones). Meh, I don't like this credibility crap, no matter which genre. This tune is musically quite average, too. This is one of the times where I'd wish they'd just rap about women's breasts instead of rubbing their "serious" point of view in your face. Then, feeling immediately right again, I get Amira Saqati in an awesome version with improved mix and an irresistable beat. Thank you Today, thank you for an arabesk session tonight! This is an incredibly great production (I'm pretty sure this is remixed), very creative, not overdone and destroyed by the newly added beat, but just masterly enhanced. I'm in love with this tune.

I don't know the next song, so I can't say how much it differs from the "album version". I assume it's a little less metal, this has - also referring to the guitar sound - quite a pop appeal. Which of course isn't meant in a negative way, this is an interesting song with a strong singer. It does seem not really determined enough for a single, but still, that's an enjoyable song. And to round it up, we get a really good House track by Mason who has a certain "Princess Superstar" moan and rap a couple of words to fat House beats. Very cool piece, awesome production - this just works in every possible way. God, I love House music. And I love you, too, my dear Today. But it's okay if you don't choose Killah Priest again next time.

Indira Radic - uzvodno od ljubavi (Lepo Se Provedi)
Jan A.P. Kaczmarek - lilly's home (Aimeé & Jaguar)

I have to make it short today as my ears hurt from wearing the headphones and a headache was already rising.
INDIRA catches my eye immediately, I admire this women for her music, this power in her voice is just incredible. Soon ... very soon she will be only a few meters away and she will stun me with her amazing Turbofolks songs. AFter that concert there is just Iron Maiden left that I need to see live before I can rest assured that I have seen all :)

Defleshed - metalbounded (Under The Blade)
Paradise Lost - rotting misery (Lost Paradise)

Eisregen - zu ehren meiner dunklen königin (Das Ende des Weges)

Starting off with Defleshed is not a bad idea - straight forward and fast Death/Thrash Metal by one of the genre's most reliable representatives. 'rotting misery' is one of my favourite "ancient" Paradise Lost tracks. It sounds as it's called, the piano sprinkles create a sinister atmosphere, and as always, Gregory Mackintosh's guitar melodies are just marvellous. I think I do prefer the "In Dub" version of this Doom song that is a bit rougher (the one that can also be found on the collection "Reflection"). Legendary diva Maria Callas then beautifully sings an aria from Catalani's "La Wally" - unbelievable how unique she sounds, and this is an awesome composition by Catalani. This may be the singer that even people who are not interested in opera should listen to. Then, a fast burning flame in the heart of a dear friend: Nocturnal Rites. This track I think I never heard before, and it starts off very promising - cool riff. Oh, wait wait - of course I know that song, I recognize the chorus. Very very good track, well done, great songwriting.

Don't be turned off by the somewhat pretentious album title, this Shivaree album is actually quite tuned down. I haven't heard this in a long time, she does have a very enjoyable voice and especially this song is presented with such effortlessness that it quite feels like living - you just get through the day, you talk and laugh and work, and when you're waiting for the bus and watch the people hurrying, shopping or talking or waiting, you feel no struggle, you think that for a brief moment you understand what life's about. But you can't hold on to the thought, and then you get into the bus. Very atmospheric then the beginning of the opener of Enslaved's "turning point" album, where they became more progressive and, if I'm not mistaken, 70ies prog influenced to a certain degree. The metal parts of this 10 minute adventure remain quite inapprochable, but it certainly sparks interest to listen to the whole album and explore Enslaved's world. The Fear Of Eternity album I needed because of the great cover. They (actually: he - this is Andrea Tilenni's one-man-band) play melancholic/melodic "Black" Metal, cheap guitar sound, drumcomputer. Still, this track manages to create a nice atmosphere. Certainly no masterpiece or must-have, but not bad. And get this: Tilenni is from sunny Sicily ;-)

Arkona I like very much, I worship that they sing in Russian and I love Masha's vocals. They are Pagan/Folk Metal and just do everything correctly on every song I've ever heard of them. As suggested in song and album title, Germany's Zarathustra are black :-) This is a great, fast Black Metal song, very well written. "Blackness around, Blackness inside", the lyrics say - what else to add? Very cool band. Today my dear, again Manowar live? What do you want from me? Yeah yeah they're a great liveband I suppose, is that what you wanted to hear? 'outlaw' is originally from "Louder Than Hell", a more recent album. It bangs away like there's no tomorrow - nice track and very Manowar. The next song is from medieval times, when they were still called "Covenant", and it's the original Black Metal rattling on a high level. I really like the sound of this one - up to "Animatronic", everything this band did was awesome and interesting. With S.E.T.I. however, it looked like they had shot their wad, and there was nothing more to come so far. I haven't heard "In Times Before Light" yet, but this track sounds very very promising.

Speaking of repetitions, here we have the wonderful Marvin Gaye again :-) This time he teams up with Tammi Terrell to perform a - as usual - very smooth version of this song. I didn't like Tammi Terrell so much in this though. The next track starts off quite modern sounding, I wouldn't have expected it to be the Diablo Swing Orchestra. This doesn't provide what I was hoping for, but of course opera (or operatic) singers get me most of the time, and so does Annlouice Loegdlund in this case. I wasn't too impressed with the songwriting here, but I'm sure that the album has more to give. And then Today digs out a very controversial band to end today's session. Eisregen are certainly interesting, lyrically I've always been a little scared to go deeper I have to say. Not that I understand a single grunted word in this song. This was a demo release in 1996, and the sound is as expected. But also here on this early release, they had these fascinating bass lines and unique bits (like the swinging drums after the intro) that provide variety and keep you interested.

Not really today...

But My version of the today's music experience (so far)

Metallica - Creeping Death (Ride the Lightning)
Iskald - Blodsbånd: Lokes Dans (Shades of Mastery)
Gamma Ray - Anywhere in the Galaxy (Powerplant)
Deadlock - End begins (wolves)

Well... I just wanna lose some words on Metallica - I think I have finally found my most favourite one of this band (I really never came to like it that much to put it in my top twenty). But this song is just moving - banging - cool.

For the rest: Iskald should be mentioned , reminds me a bit about Immortal - so check it out - maybe we can get them for a concert...

Greets, Supul
Bold Thrower - Intro...Unleashed (War Master)
Augustos - Dalaras Papakonstantinou (Sto Attikon)
Def Leppard - Bringin' On The Heartbreak (Vault: Def Leppard Greatest Hits)
Dissection - Feathers Fell (The Somberlain)
Immortal - Eternal Years On The Path To The Cemetary Gates (Pure Holocaust)
Madonna - Where's The Party (True Blue)
Naglfar - When Autumn Storms Come (Ex Inferis)
Napalm Death - Diatribes (Diatribes)
Nightingale - To My Inspiration (White Darkness)
Nightwish - Devil And The Deep Dark Ocean (Oceanborn)
Satyricon - Min Hyllest Til Vinterland (The Forest Is My Throne)
Soundgarden - Superunknown (Superunknown)
The Beatles - Ticket To Ride (1)
Therion - Summernight City (Live In Midgard)

YEAH Bolt Thrower ... perfect start into my Today list for Wednesday. Death Metal at its finest, I just love the rough vocals and double bass drums parts that make this band so unique.
A Greek song next, slow and quiet with the usual Greek touch in music and selection of intruments. I dont understand a word, but the voice melody of this language is great.
Ah meh ... next song from Def Leppard, im not skipping this song ;), but I was close to. The next song is not really a song, its an interlude played on an accoustic guitar ... and BOOM, I wasnt expecting such a sudden change, but mighty Immortal honor my Today's list with their dark presence. A song from their earlier album Pure Holocaust and they made their first step to being immortal in terms of Black Metal music. Black Metal isnt everyone's thing, but you just can't pass Immortal ...
Its getting bit funny now, a song from Immortal packed between an accoustic interlude and Madonna, thats why I love Today, this variation is just unbelieveable sometimes :).
When the last song from Napalm Death didnt light a spark, this song does, good vocals and drums. The next one is from a Japanese Metal band, fairly quiet and partly atmospheric song ... the album title was kinda catchy - White Darkness.
Ok I give up, Today presents me with a daily Nightwish song and its from Oceanborn again <3.
Im blessed with another representative of the Black Metal world, Satyricon ... but unexpected its an instrumental song and so beautiful in its way. You might think beautiful and Black Metal, listen to this song and you understand.

I should stop to start writing that late at night ... yawn, good night Today

Ska-P - planeta eskoria (Planeta Eskoria)
Jerry Goldsmith - the mummy (The Mummy - Original Soundtrack)
Boney M. - brown girl in the ring ['99 mix] (20th Century Hits)
Communic - watching it all disappear (Waves Of Visual Decay)
Manowar - black wind, fire and steel [live] (Hell On Wheels - Live)
Stereo Total - grand prix eurovision (Monokini)
Children Of Bodom - chokehold [cocked 'n' loaded] (Hatecrew Deathroll)
Blind Passengers - criminal (Bastard)
Killah Priest - the law (Priesthood)
Marvin Gaye - what's going on (Anthology)
Eva Cassidy - kathy's song (Mystera Vol. 8)
Orchestre Samy Cates - two drums (Le Boom Boom! Rock, Twist, Hully Gully, Jerk from France 1963-1968)
Melanie - lay down [candles in the rain] (Gold - Greatest Hits)
Primal Fear - dollars (Primal Fear)

Yeah, Ska from Spain! That's a great album, and although I wouldn't consider Ska to be one of my favourite genres, I enjoyed this track very much. Great that they sing in Spanish, which definitely makes it more interesting to me. Definitely worth having. Then we have the title score to a nice movie, The Mummy. Very Goldsmith in my ears, a standard (one might say conservative) Soundtrack tune where I had the feeling that not much goes if you just have the standalone score without moving pictures (unlike other Soundtracks that I worship). Nice finale with the choir though, and minute 5 is a bit reminiscent to Dimmu Borgir's 'fear and wonder', I think. Boney M. then present us a surprisingly good "remix" version of a hit - 1999's "20th Century Hits" featured all their miracle songs spiced up with a bit of modern beat. It worked very well for most of the songs, and this song makes you wanna retro-dance like most of their songs do. I again want to state that I saw them (well, only "the voice" Liz Mitchell remaining from the original line-up) live a couple of years ago - unforgettable and great fun.

The following half ballad is from critic's favourites Communic. They do sound similar to Nevermore (especially because of singer Oddleif Stensland who really almost could be Warrel Dane), but they are less crooked. Still, this album didn't really work for me when I heard it. This is a nice tune however, but it might take a couple of listens until it unfolds its beauty, as they sound very progressive and convulted, but also passionate and modern (in terms of traditional Metal). Yeah, 'black wind, fire and steel' is great and was one of the first Manowar songs I knew and liked. I do have to say though that I can't figure out why exactly, but I don't like this live version so much, something's wrong with it. Of course, the second half is only solos and noise - what the fuck? Wake me up when you're done.

Stereo Total are totally nuts. I don't have a complete album, but there are songs I love, songs I hate, songs that annoy me, songs that enlighten me, songs that embarass me - they have it all. This one is sung in French and is great and nonchalant. Crazy band, and after listening to this track I have to say I want to try to listen to a complete album again... They have lots of ideas and no sense of shame, if I recall correctly :-) Next up are old faves of good friends, I never had a Bodom phase and didn't even know this song (I am ashamed, don't worry). I really liked this one, sounds very typical for the band in my untrained ears. That's a silly song title though... The Blind Passengers were a German Industrial band. Something that always bothered me was the heavy accent of singer Nik Page, and it bothered me again in this case. The album always sounded quite aggressive to me, had a couple of good tunes, but all in all I wasn't too impressed.

I got the Killah Priest from a friend of a friend. He's part of the Wu-Tang family (which I guess sort of means that he's friends with them and stuff, he's not a band member). This track had quite a nice flow, and I just want to officially state that Rap and Hip Hop are great and inspirational genres that I'd love to know more about. In any way, this is "serious" rap as opposed to maybe 50 Cent, but I appreciate both. Oh, the legendary Marvin Gaye with a very fine tune. Very sensual as always and "traditional R&B", that was closer to soul back in the day than "today's R&B" that - despite having a soul influence - is closer to Pop and maybe a little funkier. Argh Today, what are you doing? Do you want the world to know that I have Mysteria compilations? Yes I do, but I got them from a friend... This however doesn't sound like it belongs on this album at all - it's a singer/songwriter acoustic piece that I would assume to hear in 1969, walking through a park in spring and looking over to a bunch of young people with flowers in their hair, sitting in the grass, dreaming of peace and a better world. In other words, this is a really nice track.

Then France in the 60ies waves us over to its table - that's an awful long title for a compilation, but it says it all. They don't write music like this anymore, and the 60ies appeal of the recording just makes me happy. Melanie sounds like a Schlager singer who would lip sync to lines like "Die Hoffnung läßt auch mich nicht mehr allein, oh nein" - but actually she's an American folk/pop singer, and this song again sounds like the decade of love and peace and is one of her most famous and a hippie classic - and yeah, she was at Woodstock as well. We end this fascinating journey with Primal Fear's first album. I don't like this track so much, very stomping and quite sagging. There are loads of tracks by this combo I would prefer over this one - well I'm sure Today will give them to me at some point ;-)

Heathen - goblins blade (Breaking The Silence)
Giuseppe Verdi - ch'io gli parli (Rigoletto)
Therion - enter the depths of eternal darkness (Beyond Sanctorum)
Pink Floyd - a great day for freedom (The Divison Bell)
Highlord - breath of eternity (Breath Of Eternity)
Nevermore - the seven tongues of god (The Politics Of Ecstasy)
Emperor - ærie descent (Scattered Ashes: A Decade Of Emperial Wrath)
Mercyful Fate - at the sound of the devil bell (Melissa)
Manowar - hatred [live] (Hell On Stage Live)
Mercyful Fate - desecration of souls (Don't Break The Oath)
Connie Francis - die liebe ist ein seltsames spiel (Die Liebe ist ein seltsames Spiel)
Take That feat Lulu - relight my fire
Entombed - living dead (Clandestine)
Peter Cornelius - du entschuldige - i kenn di

Heathen are cool thrashy US Metal, worth checking out - the first two albums are available for free on their website. The piece of Verdi's Rigoletto was a quite featureless extract from an average recording of a great opera. As much as I admire Mozart, Verdi is my favourite composer, combining lightness and virtousity... Then, after Therion's middle phase yesterday (Theli), UnholyMightyToday gave me a cool song from their Death Metal phase that I don't like quite as much, but that still catches one's attention - they definitely were a cool Death Metal band. 'enter the depths of eternal darkness' not only has the best song title in the world, but also awesome tempo changes.

Pink Floyd then sing a nice ballad from their newest album (1994) - not what they used to be, but very nice. Solemnity ends with Highlord and the title track of their best album - always a secret favourite of mine, typical Italian Speed Metal, but so well done (song writing, the vocals by Andrea Marchisio) that I can't get enough of it, very catchy stuff. Well, I never quite got Nevermore, and I still don't. They always sounded a little too crooked for me - here, we got a song from one of their earlier albums, there were some nice riffs and a beautiful floating chorus... interesting, strange, maybe worth another listen. Emperor then present a whirring and as always fascinating cover of a song by Thorns (who also are whirring and fascinating), and then the outro - bow down to the mighty Emperor, for ever and eternal.

The track from "Melissa" is then a little to rock'n'rolly for me. I don't mind the King's unusual infamous vocals, but the songwriting never really got me. Nice early 80ies sound though. 'hatred' is originally off the album "Into Glory Ride", I have to say the much better live sound appeals to me (something I can't get over is the weak sound of the first classic Manowar albums). I would NEVER criticize Manowar's lyrics - they're an important part of the whole appeal. But what the hell does "I kill your face" mean? Do I want to know? Quite a nice epic, but not a new favourite. Haha, Today, I got it - you give me another Mercyful Fate track that is NOT rock'n'rolly. You're my pal, thanks. It's a lot more spooky and cooler, like it. Connie Francis has one of those voices that I would die for, I cannot even try to express in written letters how much I like Connie Francis Schlager songs (and "classic rock'n'roll", which she also did). This track is very famous, and how true the lyrics... well... Connie Francis is the greatest, no doubt about that.

Originally by Dan Hartman & Loleatta Holloway, Take That covered this song in 1993 - I never really liked them musically (too Gary-Barlow-balladesk), or otherwise, actually, but I've always liked this peppy song. Nobody needs Lulu here, though. Could you leave the room until we're done? Thanks. Entombed are one of the ultimate, groundbreaking Sweden-Death bands - legendary sound from the legendary Sunlight Studios in Stockholm. Other than that, I can't really say... they just don't really work for me. This is not uncool, but it sort of passes you by. Wow, Peter Cornelius had a great voice. Very famous Austropop song, not my favourite Cornelius track (that would be 'segel im wind'), but one of my boss's favourite tracks - she knows it by heart :-) Classic.

Sacrifi-sir

I already wanted to go to sleep, but a little insomnia attack motivated me to comment my Today. Starting with Adriano Celetano, lacking the skill to speak Italian I dont understand much, im pretty sure its about blue jeans and women though :). His movies are more familiar to me and were part of my youth in the late 80s and 90s. Bingo Bongo, much better than Tarzan in my humble opinion, was even on TV a few weeks ago. Not much to say about the next song from Arkona, not my thing really. Song from Edguy of his younger albums, didnt lit a spark really. One thing I will always connect to this band though is the Vienna Metalfest with Nightwish as main act, who comes later in the playlist ... again, after being twice on my yesterday's list. Back to the story about Edguy, who probably let out a phrase on the Metalfest which I will never forget - "Picknick Metaller". Is still funny and he was right back then, as the crowd was hanging on the hills relaxing and enjoying the sun, well the few rays of light who made it through the clouds.
The next 2 will always be remembered in music history and all credits to them. I have to admit I started late with Judas Priest and its a mystery how that awesome band passed me for such a long time, but im CATCHING up listening to their albums. Unecessary to mention that its a pleasure to listen to these 2 songs :).
What shall I say, Today did it again ... 2 songs from the same band, just that its Kataklysm this time. One of my most favourite Death Metal bands and even if the songs taken from 2 albums that are not so familiar to me I can recognize the intensity in drums and vocals that I love so when listening to this band.
From the trembling sound of Kataklysm to a song of Natural Spirit, slight atmospheric touch and bit frightening intro. Hmm, my MM3 bugged out on the next song of Nightwish, so in contradiction to what I said only 2 Nightwish songs made it on my lists so far ;) ... nah, I grabbed it directly from the music library and fixed the missing info in the one that was selected from Today. The song itself was not so catchy and I turned to Pearl Jam, who definately have their spot in music history as well.
I recognize this pattern again in the next song of Sentenced, still song was ok, when not one of favourites of this band, such as No One There (Cold White Light) where I still get goose bumps when listening to it. What shall I say ... I didnt know that the Soundtrack of Record of Lodoss War made in into my music library and I skipped that song. Trivium can make a hell of a show and drag the audience to another level, I have seen it just a few weeks ago, even if the music itself is not so mine. Same with this song, not catchy but they know what they are doing.
And again a classic song at the end of my list, Wagner this time ... this is a bit suspicious already ;)

Guns N' Roses - my world (Use Your Illusion II)
Therion - to mega therion (Theli)
Devin Townsend - suicide (Accelerated Evolution)
Indira Radić - agonija (Indira)
To/Die/For - vale of tears (Epilogue)
Heinz Maria Lins - in einer kleinen konditorei (100 Gassenhauer)
Absu - the coming of war (The Sun Of Tiphareth)
Windir - krigaren si gravferd (Det Gamle Riket)
Sonata Arctica - black sheep [live] (Songs Of Silence - Live In Tokyo)
Luiz Melodia - mistério da raça (Chill:Brazil)
Frank Sinatra - strangers in the night (New York New York: His Greatest Hits)
Summoning - the legend of the master-ring (Minas Morgul)
Tori Amos - precious things (To Venus And Back)
Hans Albers - la paloma (Seine größten Hits)

For the beginning of this blog, Today gave me total crap: 'my world' is not a song and doesn't belong on that album. It doesn't belong on any album. Therion's most famous track is unbelievable genius, no matter how often you hear it, you never get tired of the powerful choruses and the great melodies. This phase was the interface between the Death Metal of their early days and the Symphonic/Heavy Metal they started to evolve with the successor "Vovin", and this song is the prototype. Unforgettable and brilliant, and with the perfect balance between vehemence and symphony. Devin Townsend's albums are always an adventure - so is this one.

As for Indira Radić, my God, what should I say: she is the holy Turbofolk goddess. 'agonija' is just endlessly cool, and although I don't understand a single word, the music and Indira's vocals sound like what I suppose means "agony" - well, as much as a Turbofolk song can. If it has to be written down again: I adore Indira Radić, what an amazing voice. Then, Today presented an old friend - I haven't heard "Epilogue" in a long time, but this song was one of my favourites. Thanks to singer Jape Perätalo, they do not sound like a HIM clone (despite the given similarities) and made quite a good album with some really strong lovesick/heartache songs. When I saw that a "100 Gassenhauer" song is up next, I was a little worried - geeze, you can imagine that out of 100 frivolous songs from the 20ies and 30ies, there are some amongst them that just DO NOT make you happy. This one was actually quite nice, and I didn't have to blush listening to the lyrics, but now I realized that this damn melody just sticks - if I only read "Konditorei" somewhere, here we go and I have the song in my head again....

Absu are then definitely not to grasp with only one listen, it was interesting noise. I have to listen to the whole album, and I will, and I want to, they are an incredibly interesting band. I remember the Windir demo song to be loud - I don't remember hell a lot else about it. Well, 'black sheep', ladies and gentlemen, features a Turbofolk melody. Yeah :-) Well, I can hear it anyway - it's the harmony run after the first chorus (and I think the song starts off with the melody as well). Great live version of this song. The next track was from the "Chill:Brazil" sampler I bought for 5 euros many years ago. This double compilation was so worth the money, I can't tell you: excellent Samba and Bossanova tunes, nicely put together and almost without fillers.

What can you say about 'strangers in the night'? One of the most romantic and cleverly written songs ever, sung by one of the most impressive singing voices our planet was ever graced with. This is a definite must have, beautiful and essential. Summoning's track didn't really leave an impression, I do remember the drumcomputer that I felt to be annoying in this song - not one of my Summoning faves. Also 'precious things' passed me by, and Hans Albers sang an alternative version of his famous hit then. Not quite as compact and coherently done as the "original" we all know, I think, but nice to hear his voice again.

Crematory - The Game (Act Seven)
Dio - Magica-Reprise (Magica)
Emperor - Towards The Pantheon (In the Nightside Eclipse)
Emperor - An Elegy Of Icaros (Emperial Live Ceremony)
Kamelot - A Sailorman's Hymn (The Expedition)
Lothlorien - The Other Side (The Primal Event)
Madonna - Forbidden Love (Something To Remember)
Manowar - Heart of Steel (Hell On Stage Live)
Napalm Death - Morale (The Code Is Red ... Long Live The Code)
Nightwish - The Riddler (Oceanborn)
Nightwish - The Siren (Once)
Persuader - Passion/Pain (Evolution Purgatory)
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - Fuggy, Crudele, Fuggy ! (Don Giovanni)

What a crazy Monday, finally some time to comment my "Today" list. One thing grabs my attention immediately, Emperor twice and Nightwish twice appearing in the list (what does "Today" wanna tell me here) and Don Giovanni from Mozart as final piece of melodic art. Starting with a rather heavy song from Crematory to Dio's story-telling wise song of Magica, followed by the unmistakeable sound of Emperor. Had to stop there and listen again, quite some time I listened to them, always a pleasure. Lothlorien, recommended by a good friend of mine, impressed me with solid vocals and guitars, too bad I only have one album of them. Among all the Metal songs a Pop song from Madonna comes up and her soothing voice is a welcome change in music :). From the Queen of Pop to the Kings of Metal, a slow intro and scores of fans chanting along accompany this Manowar song. Morale didnt spark a light and I went to Nightwish, where The Riddler occupied a spot on my MP3 player for several weeks, same for Persuader and their album Evolution Purgatory.
Last but not least, Mozart, a surprise and classic end for today :)
